The best affiliate programs are the ones the fit well with your site. If you have a travel information site, you will do well with hotel, travel and tour affiliate programs.
You can sign up with the following sites as they have lots of affiliate programs to choose from, often big reliable companies.
eBay for example offers their affiliate program through CJ.
Commission Junction
Linkshare

The affiliate program I am with gives us awesome support and great Niche products.
they have tons of banners, website templates and really good guides on how to sell their products.
they are of course free to join, have a look you have nothing to lose, if you look in their open forums you will get an idea of how well people are really doing.

It really depends on what product you want to promote. Do you want to offer a hard product, info product, or a service?
You can pretty much cover most of the bases with these 3 that I use extensively:
The first one focuses on information products and software. The last 2 have some digital goods, but mostly focus on hard products or services.
The advantage of software and information products is that they have higher profit margins. For Clickbank, you also don’t have to sign up for each merchant (kind of like Amazon). It’s a legit company, but you’ll want to do your due diligence for each product or merchant that you promote.
